Cordova fines may signal the beginning of 2012 race

Dems say the violations were inadvertent; GOP says earlier punishment would have put Rose in the commissioner seat.

An administrative law judge's ruling that Pueblo County Commissioner John Cordova's election campaign was fined more than $6,000 for two violations of state election finance laws is either the last battle of a hard-fought 2008 election - or the first volley in the 2012 race.

Debbie Rose, the Beulah Republican who narrowly lost to Cordova, filed the complaints in September and said a prompt investigation into the matter would have tipped the election her way. Rose held a narrow lead over Cordova until provisional ballots were counted after Election Day, which gave the Democrat a 1,000-vote margin of victory.
